2023/24 GameDay Squad AUS Cricket Team Preview: Melbourne Renegades

2023/24 GameDay Squad AUS Cricket Team Preview: The Renegades had a good BBL12 and won half of their games over the round robin before being bundled out by the Heat in the knockout match. Over the history of the BBL, the Renegades have one championship and have had four visits to the finals. They have played 132 games, won 56, lost 75 and had 1 no result.

This season the Renegades go into the BBL13 with six new faces, and they are Harry Dixon, Joe Clarke, Quinton de Kock, Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa. We have seen the number of matches in the round robin decrease from fourteen to ten for each team this season. For the Renegades to reach the finals, I believe the magic number of wins will need to be five. I think they have a well-balanced side with plenty of talent across the board. They have several big names that come with plenty of T20 experience, and I believe they will be able to make the finals for the fifth time. After looking at the BBL12 results, it seems that the Renegades prefer to chase as they elected to field first in six of the nine matches when they won the toss. However, they did win only three of these matches.

The Renegades open their season against the Sixers at the SCG on the 8th of December. In the BBL12 round robin the Sixers were unbeaten at this venue and it will be a tough ask for the Renegades to go there first up and win. If they are to pull off the upset, their BBL13 campaign will be off to a great start.

Player To Watch – Quinton de Kock (Wicket-Keeper)

de Kock will be playing in his first season of BBL and what a great signing for the competition he is. He will join Finch, Clarke and Marsh in what looks to be the best top order out of any of the teams. De Kock was the best wicketkeeper in GDS at the recent Cricket World Cup. Over his ten matches he averaged 59.4 runs and scored four centuries. I’m expecting him to take the BBL by storm and if he has the keeping duties, he will likely be my starting keeper in most matches.

Most Valuable Player – Joe Clarke (Wicket-Keeper)

In BBL12, Clarke was the best wicketkeeper based on GDS average. He averaged 45 points per game, 34 came via the bat and 11 through keeping. I have him listed as my MVP as I’m assuming that he will be the one behind the stumps. If he’s not, De Kock will become my MVP due to the likelihood of Clarke fantasy production taking a hit. In BBL12, Clarke was the top wicketkeeper in eight of his fourteen matches.

Biggest Bust Candidate - Peter Siddle (Bowler)

Siddle is very experienced in all forms of cricket, but I fear that his best days in fantasy are behind him. In BBL12 he played in eleven of the Strikers fourteen matches but only bowled four overs in five of the matches. Over these five matches he averaged 33 points based on GDS scoring. An average of 33 points would have had him ranked around 20th in BBL12 for the bowlers. I think his usage in BBL13 is likely going to be the same as BBL12 and therefore he’s my biggest bust candidate. Siddle only finished among the top three bowlers in three of his eleven matches in BBL12. I would prefer to start bowlers that are likely to bowl their full complement of overs in most matches.
